Cavan House – Peace in the Valley

in an 18th century gambrel reproduction.

Open Hutch Ontario, c 1830 Top 12” cut off with a chainsaw to fit in vendor’s truck on the way to the Christie Antique Show. Expertly restored by Craig Black.

Six-Panel Door c 1820 with transom, clapboards clinched with repro forged nails.

The gambrel gable sheathed in shingles rather than clapboard, a cost saving in earlier times.

Set on the ridge overlooking the trout-filled stream. Young carpenter takes a break.

The more we looked at the spot overlooking the stream, the more we liked it. I was beginning to see it. The east room would have French doors opening right out to the bush. Maybe sets of those Indian shutters for extra protection… not for the New Englanders from Indians, but us from the weather. What better use of the knowledge gained during those visits to Old Deerfield? When you meet so many antiquarians with a similar passion for old houses, you can’t help but put it to use.
